History

Karandeniya Village Task Force Council
From the beginning of Sri Lanka’s history to the second half of the twentieth century, the village council can be called a rural administrative institution / people’s administrative authority that has met the needs of the rural people in all areas of administration, economic, social and judicial, etc. for more than 2500 years. From the beginning of the British colonial period, rural provincial government in Sri Lanka was governed by village councils. From the distant past, the people of Sri Lanka used to discuss rural affairs by meeting under the shade of trees or under the shade of trees. Under the Colebrook reforms implemented in 1833, village councils were ignored. The Village Council was allowed to continue as before, but judicial powers were removed from it.
Karandeniya got a village council on 01 July 1953. That is, 82 years after that system of governance was restored in the island.Until 1953, Karandeniya belonged to Ambalangoda Village Council. Uragasmanhandiya got a village council in 1962. 09 years after Karandeniya got a Village Committee. Before that, Uragasmanhandiya belonged to Kosgoda village council.

First Village Council.
In 1953, 06 representatives were included in the first village council of Karandeniya. Mr. PDA Fernando, who was the representative of Madakumbura division and a resident of Talgahawatta, was elected to the position of its first chairman unopposed. He worked in that position for about 7 ½ years. The first village council office was held at the house of Mr. BH Dainis Mudalali, near Mahaedanda, Gorakaduwa junction on Elpitiya Road, Ambalangoda.

History of Karandeneya Regional Church
On April 16, 1987, local councils were established under the Local Councils Act No. 15 of 1987 enacted by Parliament. Accordingly, 257 local councils were established in 1987. After the establishment of the regional council, the official period started from 01 January 1988.
Considering the inadequacy of the service provided by the development councils without a representative system of local government, local councils were formed to correspond to a division of the local vice-chancellor (currently the local secretary).
